HKXRA Visits LingVision Space: Inside China's Largest 4DGS Studio

Inside China's largest 4DGS studio — and a glimpse of what's next for XR collaboration in the Greater Bay Area.

China's Largest 4DGS Studio

HKXRA visited LingVision Space (靈視空間), a Greater Bay Area facility built entirely around 4D Gaussian Splatting (4DGS) capture — reportedly the largest studio of its kind in China. The setup includes an 80-camera 4K capture array housed within a 10m × 3m stage, with a dedicated 5m shooting zone calibrated for full-body volumetric performance capture — a striking demonstration of how mature GBA 4DGS hardware has become.

What is 4DGS?

Think about watching a normal video: one camera, one angle. If you want to see the scene from another side, you simply can't — that angle was never recorded.

4D Gaussian Splatting (4DGS) removes that limitation. Instead of one camera, dozens surround the subject and film it from every angle at the same time. A computer then combines all those views into a single moving 3D recording — made of millions of tiny points of light and colour — that a viewer can walk around, look behind, or step inside of in VR or AR. It behaves less like a video and more like a hologram you can explore. The "4D" simply means 3D plus time: the subject isn't just modelled in three dimensions, it's captured moving, so the recording plays back as a living scene rather than a frozen one.

How It Differs from Traditional Filming

A normal camera decides, once and for all, what the audience will see — the angle is fixed at the moment of shooting. With 4DGS, the viewing angle isn't decided in advance; it's chosen by the viewer, after the fact, every time it's watched.

The Benefits

  • Freedom of viewpoint — viewers explore a scene from any angle, rather than watching a fixed shot.

  • 360° free interaction — the digital figure can be rotated, zoomed, and viewed at any distance, enabling immersive observation and hands-on interaction.

  • Shot once, used many ways — a single capture session can serve VR, AR, and flat video, without re-filming for each format.

  • Real people, real detail — because it's captured from real performers and real lighting rather than built by a CGI artist, movement and expression stay natural and lifelike.

  • A new way to preserve and teach — a martial arts form, a performance, or a craft technique can be recorded once and revisited from any angle, making it well suited to education, training, and cultural preservation.

  • Flexible multi-scene switching — real-person digital assets can be dropped into different virtual environments and switched between display spaces with one click, adapting to a wide range of XR applications.


From Tai Chi to Wing Chun: New Possibilities for Heritage Digitisation

The conversation also touched on heritage digitisation and XR training. LingShi Kongjian's ongoing 4DGS capture of Chen-style Tai Chi prompted discussion of a parallel opportunity to preserve Wing Chun and other internationally recognised Chinese martial arts the same way, alongside applications in fire drills, earthquake evacuation, and industrial safety training — an area HKXRA sees as holding strong potential for Hong Kong's education and public-safety sectors.

A Productive Exchange with LingJing Technology

The visit closed with a productive discussion with LingShi Kongjian's parent company, LingJing Technology (靈鏡科技), on the compatibility between the two ecosystems — Hong Kong's strength in software, education, and enterprise applications alongside the GBA's production and hardware capacity. Both sides see meaningful room to complement one another as XR content production continues to scale across the region.
